There’s a fundamental connection

between seeming and being… We all become what we pretend to be. It’s like everyone tells a story about themselves inside their own head. That story makes you what you are. We build ourselves out of that story.

That’s the funniest thing: you can’t prove that you’re the right person for a role.

What you have to remember about all of this is, the product you’re selling is extremely and completely personal: it’s you. So when they say they don’t want you, they say they don’t want you personally, and it hurts, and it costs you something every time.

The reason why actors are celebrated…is because they’re actually taking risks that a lot of people wouldn’t take because its embarrassing. Humiliation is one of the greatest fears in the world. Actors risk humiliation every time they go to audition.

So you’re gonna have to get a tough thick skin and go, “I still think I’m on the right track, I still think I’m going the right way…I think I can do it.”

- George Clooney, on trying to prove you’re the right person for a role.
